Using Articles in English (a, an, the)

An article is a word which defines a noun as specific or unspecific. Click here for more information on the use of articles in the English language.

Consider the following examples:

1. ‘Would you like a cup of coffee?’ We use ‘a/an’ to talk about an unspecified item.
2. ‘The coffee at the meeting was really cold.’ We use ‘the’ to talk about a specific item or items.
3. ‘I love coffee. It’s my favorite drink.’ We don’t use any article to talk about things in general.

1. ….. apple pie is my favourite dessert.

2. I bought ….. apple from the canteen this morning.

3. ….. apple a day keeps the doctor away.

4. She speaks ….. good English.

5. Markus is ….. doctor.

6. ….. English people are very nice.

7. ….. English people in this hotel are very nice.
